About the SSO Course

Within this Ship Security Officer course module, there are various audio recordings and / or videos for you to watch and listen to. These are not mandatory viewing, but may enhance your overall learning experience.

If you do not have sufficient quality speakers on your laptop or device, or you wish to study in private, you should make sure that you have attached either a set of external speakers to your device or you have earphones or headphones so that you get the most out of this course as possible to ensure you receive the full learning experience.

About the SSO Course

Welcome to the Online Transport Canada Approved (STCW ISPS) Proficiency as Ship Security Officer (SSO) Course. The Course meets with all the knowledge, Understanding and Proficiency (KUP) requirements of the key learning objectives as required and as approved by Transport Canada as meeting the requirements laid down in:

" Regulation VI/5, paragraph 1 and Section A-VI/5, paragraphs 1 to 4 of the STCW Convention and Code 1978, as amended and incorporates Proficiency in Security Awareness and Designated Security Duties laid down in Regulation VI/6 and Section A-VI/6 of the STCW Convention and Code. "

About the SSO Course

The Online (STCW ISPS) Proficiency as Ship Security Officer Course of Learning has been written by Virtual Maritime Academy to provide learners with an easy to follow and interact with, fully Transport Canada Approved Certification.

The Course consists of three separate modules, and this is the first of those three modules. Each module must be taken in order, and all material provided is done so in a sequential learning manner. This means, you must work your way through the lessons of each module without jumping ahead.

About the SSO Course

To give those seeking a certificate of proficiency as a Ship Security Officer the essential education and training meeting the Knowledge, Understanding and Proficiency (KUP) requirements set out in the following STCW table, which supports Chapter XI-2 of the annex to the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) 1974, as amended and the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code. The training must meet the following requirements:

Competence:

Maintain and supervise the implementation of a Ship Security Plan.
Assess security risk, threat and vulnerability.
Undertake regular inspections of the ship to ensure appropriate security measures are implemented and maintained.
Ensure that security equipment and systems, if any, are properly operated, tested and calibrated.
Encourage security awareness and vigilance.

About the SSO Course

Chapter 1
The learner understands the importance of ship security and the roles and responsibilities of organisations and individuals involved in it.

Chapter 2
The learner knows how to assess security risk, threat and vulnerability to the ship, its personnel, cargo and operations.

Chpater 3
The learner understands the capabilities and limitations of security methods, equipment and systems.

Chapter 4
The learner knows how to implement a ship security plan and related regulatory requirements.

Chapter 5
The learner knows how to determine the effectiveness of current security arrangements, procedures and equipment.

Chapter 6
The learner understands how to promote security awareness and vigilance on board ship.

Take a Break Reminders:

As this is approximately a 21 hours course, it is recommended that the Learner takes a break at least every 45 minutes in order to allow them sufficient rest from the course. There are regular 'Take a Break' reminders throughout the course just in case you get carried away with learning to prompt you to take a rest.

Going In & Out of the SSO Course Modules:

If required, you can also fully exit the module at any point and come back to it and pick up from where you left off. So if you need to take a few days rest, or other duties take precedence, you have that ability to move in and out of the module itself. However, once you commence the final assessment on completion of all lesson, you must take this assessment in one sitting or it will simply reset.
